If this is your current predicament… my thoughts go out to you and your nose!  Or if you just want to know what to do for future reference…

If you’ve ever had a dog get sprayed by a skunk, you know that the smell is AWFUL… When a skunk sprays a curious canine, the odor is vastly more pungent than that icky smell you can detect while driving on the open road.  And most often, it’s right in your poor pup’s face as they decide to get a closer look at their new furry friend!  Skunks are nocturnal and really can’t see well, so their foul smelling spray is their best offense against predators.

***Note: If you see a skunk in the day time, it is LIKELY rabid. USE CAUTION and call Animal Control***
Likewise, if your dog interacts with and/or is sprayed by a skunk in the daytime, be sure to call your vet to take the proper precautions, just in case the skunk is rabid.

Mix:

  • 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup of baking soda
  • 1-2 teaspoons of liquid soap (I like Dawn dish detergent–or Dr. Bonners soap if available)
  • juice of a lemon

Combine these ingredients in a large bucket or bowl and work it thoroughly throughout your dog’s coat.  Be careful around their face, use a wash cloth to gently wipe around the eyes.  Let the mixture soak in the coat for a good 5 minutes if you can. Be sure not to let the dog lick their coat.  Rinse thoroughly with warm water.  You may need to repeat this if the smell does not dissipate after the first wash.

*Caution: Solution cannot be stored in a closed container, as under pressure, it can explode.
